Lexicon Series

Letterpress and Ink Painting

2015 - Present

Dimensions: 8" x 5" each

Not all are shown here.

lex·i·con  noun

The vocabulary of a person, language, or branch of knowledge.

Lexicon Series is an ongoing series started in 2015. Every year I keep a list of words and concepts that stand out to me. Many of the phrases are popular sayings and feelings of the year while others are autobiographical. Once I have my list I go through them and play word games. For example, adding a different suffix to the end or beginning to create duality in the phrase or highlight words within words to bring about additional meaning. I then create an oil painting in response to the word or phrase. As of 2021 Lexicon Series is over 80 paintings strong and continues to grow. When experiencing these paintings a story emerges of our collective vocabulary and human experience.

Growing into an adult and living on my own I naturally began examining my identity and history as an individual. This led to the creation of autobiographical and narrative work which followed the logic and language of a laboratory experiment.  In the creation of this work, I used visual characteristics such as grouping, voids, color, and material choice as my experimental factors. Grouping spoke about interpersonal relationships between individuals. Missing faces became the presence of the void. Rather than being moments of emptiness, they represented an active space; full of conceptual and emotional possibility. The characteristic of color spoke to aesthetic decisions as well a spiritual nature that furthered the existentialism of the void in some pieces. Materiality is dictated by choosing the medium and material that has the most appropriate language to communicate the intended thoughts or emotions to my audience. It is because of this, and because of my love for learning, that I am always eager to explore new processes and materials in order to assimilate new visual languages to my vocabulary. I see the process of making much like running a lab, while the finished work is the report. Unlike a scientist who works for resolutions these all end in a premise. Always asking questions, but seldomly answering them.

The dark triad is a personality disorder that consists of three main characteristics: narcissism, machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Throughout this triptych an investigation into this overall personality is taking place. Subtle aesthetic decisions come together to create an overall mood. People with this personality tend to come off as very charming, confidant, and friendly. It isn’t until further involvement with said person that what was charming becomes cunning, confidence turns into entitlement, and friendly becomes a means to end. The overall aesthetic of these prints comes off as just that, charming, friendly, and “pretty.” With further involvement they begin to become more macabre as the pretty fades away and the concepts sets in. The details in the aesthetics are chosen to further this reading. Each print consists of two layers of small gray and lavender forms. They are abstract and yet conceptually specific. These symbols represent some aspect of the personality trait’s individual histories. Other representations such as cut off limbs, style of dress, drawing style, color choices, overlapping colors, and overall composition all serve to push this expression forward. Throughout all of this, a structure is set in the shape of a badge type form. It serves as the final placeholder; a read into not only the status and romanticized nature that these individuals place on themselves, but also the status that culture has placed upon them.

This self portrait was made at a time when the way I saw myself was a-skewed. Dealing with episodes of rushing intense thoughts I was left feeling separated. As if my mind, body, and soul where all disconnected from each other. A vast space of emptiness was always felt after these thoughts rushed away and a feeling of displacement set in.
